If you are tired of running out of beer, or having to pay premium prices for a merely average product, consider producing your own brand in the privacy of your own home. Making a five-gallon batch of beer is not hard to do once you have the proper equipment.First, you need to assemble some basic equipment. You will need a five-gallon container made of stainless steel, which will hold a mixture of malt extract, water and hops. In addition, you will need a fermenter, which often is a glass or plastic container used to to hold the solution during fermentation. This can be as low-tech as a large bucket. Also necessary is a strainer and funnel, which will be used to transfer the solution from the boiler to the fermenter. A siphon hose will be necessary to have on hand for bottling.
The novice home brewer will also need an airlock and stopper. They are designed to keep air from getting into the fermenter, while allowing carbon dioxide to escape. Also have on hand a stick-on thermometer for testing the temperature of the mixture at different points during the process. A bottling bucket will hold the liquid before being bottled. And, of course, you will need several bottles to hold the finished product.
Prior to starting any batch, make sure you have decided which kind to produce, whether light, dark or bitter and full of hops flavor, before buying any ingredients. Today, most online brewing retailers have put them together in kits which make first-time batches simple. Included in the kit should be malt extract, usually in a can. Other ingredients are yeast, specialty grains, and hop pellets.
All equipment has to be sterilized carefully before beginning, and the best way is by total immersion in a solution containing chlorine, or bleach. When cleaning the containers, use a non-abrasive cleanser to avoid any scratches or pits which may potentially house contaminating bacteria. They must be totally dry before using. Bottles can be recycled, and run through a hot cycle in the dishwasher before being reused.
After water is added to your carefully chosen ingredients, the solution is called the “wort.” While experienced brewers have their own preferred wort ingredients and process, the basic method involves adding malt carefully to the boiling water, and letting it simmer for about 10 to 20 minutes. After that time, the hops are added, and the solution is allowed to cool to approximately eighty degrees. When cool, the wort is then poured through a strainer and funnel into the fermenter.
Place your fermenter in a cool, dry location without any direct sunlight in order for proper fermentation to occur. Total darkness is unnecessary, and a closet environment will work. Check your product every couple of days to make sure it is not getting too hot, and it should be finished after seven to ten days. Examine it for clarity. If it is clear, with residue at the bottom only, then it is probably ready to be bottled.
Fill each container to one inch below the bottle top after they have been primed with sugar. Then cap them securely. Wait about a week for conditioning to complete, and then your product should be ready to drink.
