Five Killer SEO Mistakes

IF you own a website which isn’t performing well in the search engines you don’t necessarily have to use the services of an SEO Consultant to make some significant changes to your ranking. The are some pretty obvious and simple issues that many website owners tend to overlook but can be dealt with. Here are the five most significant issues that crop up time and time again.

Wrong Page Title – This particular meta-tag is arguably the most important on any web page. However, it is also the most misused tag and many web pages have a totally useless page title from an SEO perspective. How many times have you looked at the title of a page and it’s simply labelled ‘home page’, or ‘our products’? Theses titles don’t tell the search engines anything about the content of your page and therefore will never rank for searches relating to your products or service.

Identifying Keywords – Keywords or phrases are the cornerstone of every SEO campaign and if you haven’t taken the time to establish what keywords your customers are using then you will always struggle to attract traffic to your website. You need ot establish 4-5 primary key phrases that effectively describe what your business offers and that are likely to be used by your potential customers in the search engines. You must remember to use simple terms that are broad enough to identify what you do but specific enough to bring in the right visitors.

Not Enough Content – At it’s most basic level, when people use a search engine, there requirement generally fall into three categories. They either want an answer to a question, require information on a specific subject or they have a commercial need that they want to address, i.e. they want to buy something. Every page of your website should comprehensively be able to address it’s purpose by giving the visitor exactly what they want. Being lazy and scrimping on content means your web page will be impotent and won’t satisfy visitors on any level.

How Robots Read Your Page – The first thing a robot should see on your page after all of the head info is the actual relevant page content. So many website make a huge mistake here and include forms, huge HTML menus and irrelevant text like addresses. All of the this info needs to be placed behind your main content so the robot can dive straight into the meaty content of your page and not get distracted with stuff that won’t help your SEO efforts one little bit.

No Back-links – Every time somebody links to your web page, the search engines consider it a ‘vote’ for your site. It’s not always about the quantity of the links; quality counts too but one thing is for sure, if you don’t have any links to your web page then the search engines will not consider it particularly relevant.

You can easily make some changes to your website to overcome any issues from the above list that your site is failing on. It’s pretty safe to say that if you can address these issues, your website will have more than a decent chance of attracting more customers for your business.
