Home Brew Beer Novices: How To Create Your Own Ale
Where there used to be prohibitive restrictions on the practice of home brew beer, many countries now allow people to produce their own alcoholic beverages at home. There are often still laws against the production of hard alcohol, but in most countries beers and wine can be freely produced.
Before producing a beer or ale, a recipe will need to be chosen. Just like cooking a meal, following a recipe to create a beer will give it a distinctive taste, and by altering the recipe, something new can be created. In general though, all beers will need to contain at least some water, barley malt, hops and yeast (for the fermentation).
Beer mostly consists of water, which means that good quality water is essential for the brewing process. It needs to have a mineral content because the yeast, which will be discussed later in the article, needs a mineral content to properly ferment. This means distilled water cannot be used, but most spring waters are a good choice.
Barley is used in the form of a malt. It contains most of the fermentable sugars and additional minerals, which helps the yeast to ferment. It is also used to produce the darker-type ales by first heating the barley, which produces additional starch. Heating the barley means that both the color and taste of the beer will change.
Hops are acidic, which means that, as well as acting as a preservative, they help to balance the overall taste of the beer (their bitterness balances the sweetness of the barley and hop’s sugar content). The brewing process at first involves boiling the mixture; by boiling the hops for different amounts of time, their flavor is altered, which enables the brewer to change their beer from flavorful and aromatic to a bitter drink, depending on what type they are brewing.
Yeast is extremely important as it is what ferments the mixture and produces alcohol. Yeast produces alcohol by consuming the sugar content. There are only two main types somebody brewing at home is likely to come across: Lager yeast and ale Yeast. Ale yeast can ferment alcohol at room temperature, which means it is much easier to use. Lager yeast is necessary to produce beers like Pilsner, but it needs a cold room in order to properly ferment; this means it is not suitable unless one has a specialized container to brew the beer.
There is quite a lot of equipment needed to get started. However, many specialist stores sell pre-made kits containing everything needed to brew the first batch at a lower cost. Most hobbyists will experiment with different recipes until finding their favorite. Generally speaking though, to brew a beer, the barley and hops will need to be boiled in the spring water for a set amount of time. After the mixture has cooled, it will need to be mixed with yeast and sealed in a fermentation tank for up to three weeks, which is when it can be siphoned into bottles.
The fact that beers are so cheaply available in stores does not deter the millions of people who do this hobby and create their own home brew beer every year.
