It is important to place the fermenter in an area where it can not be disturbed and doesn’t have large temperature changes. Not doing this can cause the whole batch to be ruined.

Next must make sure to have a good brew pot. Usually a 20 quart stainless steel cooking pot, this allows someone to boil the ingredients until combined. This can take multiple times and can last as long as 30 minutes or more per interval. This process requires extreme heat and can be dangerous so use caution and take the necessary safety measures.

Some things that are required can be found in the kitchen already. A turkey baster, whisk or wort spoon ( spoon designed to let maximum air into the wort right before fermentation), tongs, spoon, and a measuring cup. The turkey baster is for pulling samples of the wort. Right before the wort goes in to be fermented, it is stirred with the whisk or wort spoon until frothy along the top to help with fermentation. Tongs allow the person to remove the hops bag from the wort because of heat. Some other things that will be used is a are a dial thermometer and a glass.

Sanitizer is a very important piece of equipment. The equipment needs to be sanitized right before placing the wort into it. This prevents dangerous bacteria from being able to grow within the beer. It also keeps out unnecessary dirt and debris that can ruin the taste of a beer.

A hydrometer is a device that measures original gravity readings after the brewing and cooling of wort. These measurements need to be precise to make sure that the wort is at the right stage for fermentation. If the wort is at the wrong stage before fermentation begins than the entire wort can be ruined.

Sometimes muslin or grain bags are used as a substitute, the hops bag allows all the grains or loose ingredients to cook into the wort. It also keeps everything easy to remove with no straining or unnecessary steps. Some reusable versions are available and come in different sizes.

With many different recipes and kits available for beginners, picking up this hobby is relatively easy. The process is time consuming and one must pay attention to detail, but with a little effort the right combination can be created to help jump start a business or win a competition if that is the goal. One must remember to have fun and take care as accidents can occur.
