Starcraft 2 is the successor to Starcraft: Brood war whose game mechanics were so enticing it is a national sport in South Korea. Blizzard Entertainment decided that the successor should not be a doppelganger of the first though. Although the core gameplay mechanics remains the same as the original Starcraft; much of the micro and macro mechanics were revised making Starcraft 2 a completely new game.

Starcraft 2 and Starcraft brood war are different games though. Although they are based off the same concepts of micro and macro within a RTS context.
