There were also flawless, round, and natural white pearls that were valued more than gemstones. These are some of the finest pearls that were provided by South India, but, the Italians were able to make very good imitation glass gems and pearls that could be determined only by a gemologist.

There is an existing historical proof that methods and preparations for false pearls existed back in 1300. In order to produce imitation pearls also, white powdered glass was mixed with albumen and snail slime.
