Physical Therapist Jobs Provide Job Security

The PTA, or physical therapy assistant, performs tasks that are similar to the physical therapist such as helping patients perform physical exercises that are meant to help the patient regain strength, flexibility, and confidence. Assistants also perform therapeutic massages which help patients who need pain relief due to a debilitating injury, illness, disease, or other physical malady.

The physiotherapist assistant performs front office duties including the scheduling of patient appointments, insurance billing, and staff management. The assistant is an important member of the clinic team because she can be relied upon to help out in all aspects of the clinic’s everyday operations including patient care and administrative functions.

Therapists are responsible for developing therapeutic exercises that help patients recover from injuries, surgery, or other physically limiting situations. Therapists work with patients for weeks or even months depending on the patient’s medical needs. An assistant can help the patient perform the therapeutic exercises but only under to supervision of a licensed therapist. An assistant has to be ready to help the therapist out in any given area of the clinic.

An aid helps prep the patient for his exercise work and cleans up before and after the exercise session. The aid reports to the physiotherapist the patient’s progress and any comments the patient has about his medical condition. The physiotherapist relies heavily on the assistant to provide patient updates, keep the clinic running smoothly, and to facilitate patient exercise sessions.

Choose the right school for physiotherapist assistant training because the right program will open many doors for employment. The curriculum should include biology, medical science, and general education courses related to anatomy.

Most states require that students complete an associate’s degree before taking course work related to physical therapy work. However, some states allow students to start their training in physical therapy without an associate’s degree background. Some states require an associate’s degree background and course work related to emergency medical techniques such as CPR before a student can sit for the state exam.
