Sash Windows Then & Now

Prior to the 16th century, glass was not easy to produce. Glass was a rare commodity and a very expensive one at that. Only the very rich could even think of the luxury of having glazed windows. However, during that century the use of crown glass became more widespread and eventually contributed to the historic development of the sash window.

In 17th century, sash windows were used for the first time. It was the period, when big glasses were fitted in to thick oak frames and in the polished bars. In early 18th century, the important and new invention was the creation of cylinders using glass.

The glass made in 18th century was a revised version of the sash windows. This new glass was not that thick and heavy as compared to the previous ones. This meant that more details of decoration could be added in it. Hence, it exactly fitted the gracious Georgian Era.

Sash windows were constructed with a classical touch in line with the architectural fashion of the period. They had a totally different look compared to the drab, leaded casements that were in use in prior centuries.

For the wealthy people, sash windows became a much-wanted commodity. After 1850, the need of using sash windows further increased with the introduction of plate glass. Now larger windows were made.

Two glazed sashes were the original structure of sash windows. When these windows were opened, the glass went in to the wooden frame usually protected in walls. Cords were used so that when in raised and open position, the sashes could be balanced, using metal weights.

After the introduction of the glass plates of lighter weight, it was easier to make bigger windows. These windows had sashes that glided perpendicularly as a group of six, eight, or more. These balanced widows were perfect to be used in grand homes and buildings that had extremely large rooms. The material used to make the window frames was usually softwood and after that, it was painted.

Although these windows may seem to be simple but in fact the sash windows made today are much simpler than that used in the past. Sash windows of modern age use spiral balances instead of the cords and weights. These windows are more reliable and hard to repair and thus modern advancement has changed the historic development of the sash window.

When you have double glazed wooden windows installed, you can quickly add to the value of your home. The sash windows that you select will be cost effective and beautify your home.
