The webpage was initially limited to Harvard students but was expounded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League and Stanford University. Then it expanded support for students at other universities and finally, to everybody 13 years old and above.

Facebook gives a lot of apps and one of the most famous is the Pictures app. Through this application, users can upload albums and photos. Facebook allows its users to upload a limitless quantity of images unlike other image hosting services like Photobucket and Flickr. In Facebook’s early years, users were limited to simply 60 images per album. And as of May 2009, the quantity of pictures that users can upload in one album increased to 200. Another feature under the images add-on is the capability to mark users in a photo. Private settings can likewise be arranged for different albums, allowing merely the users that are specified to view that particular album.

In August 22, 2006, Facebook launched the Notes add-on. This add-on provides a blogging feature that allowed users to tag and even embed images. Later, users were permitted to import blogs from other blogging pages like Xanga, Blogger and LiveJournal. And in April 7, 2008 Facebook launched an instant messaging add-on called “Chat”. This add-on lets users intercommunicate with friends. It is also similar to certain instant messaging programs.

On June 2009, Facebook released a “Username” feature. This feature lets users change their URL to a much simpler one. For example, your URL will look like http://www.facebook.com/astraea instead of the common http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=4238742361. In addition to this, Facebook can now be accessed by smart phones through their web-browsing apps.

Like other famous social networking web pages, Facebook also got its share of controversy. It has been blocked in various countries like Pakistan, Syria, Vietnam, Iran and North Korea. It was also banned in several places of work to foreclose employees from wasting time using this web page. Despite this, latest studies still stated that Facebook is the most used social networking website arount the world today.
