When Hammurabi used this code, he didn’t know that he was in fact, laying the foundation for Rome to carry on the tradition, but in an even greater way.

During the sixth century B. C., Justinian the First, Emperor over the Eastern Roman Empire, began a collection of works that centered around matters of jurisprudence. This eventually came to be known as the Code of Justinian, or Corpus Juris Civilis. While working on this project, he commissioned the Tribonian, or royal official of his court, to assemble a team to speed up the process.

The Tribonian and his team worked for a long time on this project. They edited the works and implemented things that they thought would accommodate the new system of laws. When their job was finished, it was promptly distributed throughout all the kingdom in the Latin language. The citizens were probably awed to have justice set before their eyes, and not only on the pedestals of those who were rich and powerful. All could now understand justice, whether rich or poor. This would come to have a profound impact on the future, more powerful Roman Empire.

The greatest and main goal of this system is to provide every level of citizenry with access to the rules and regulations of justice in the land, most of all the rules that pertain to himself, personally. It’s a collection of codified regulations. It’s also unique in that the laws are not secret, only available for the government to either create, hide or destroy.

Immigration to the Western world was triggered due to religious persecution in Europe. When thousands fled to North America to seek a safe haven, they brought many of their European aspects and ideas of culture with them. This would impact their laws in a great way. Later, as colonial expansion pushed westward, these ideas were carried across the new country. They helped to shape the then young United States of America, as their legal system was then being molded.

In short, the contribution of the centuries and the ancient kingdoms of the earth have all contributed to the modern legal systems that we are familiar with today.
